Methylfolate vs. Folic Acid: What Is the Difference?

Folate is the general name for vitamin B9, while folic acid and methylfolate are specific forms. Labels can be confusing, and the most appropriate form and amount depend on diet, life stage, health history, and clinical guidance.

The short answer

Folic acid is the form commonly used in fortified foods and many supplements. L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, often shortened to methylfolate or 5-MTHF, is another supplemental form. Neither label term by itself establishes the right dose or a better result for every person.

What is folic acid?

Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate used in supplements and food fortification. It has a strong evidence base for helping people who can become pregnant meet recommendations intended to reduce neural tube defect risk. Do not replace established prenatal advice with online form comparisons.

What is methylfolate?

Methylfolate is a reduced folate form used in some supplements. Methyl Folate Plus lists folate from L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium salt and folinic acid calcium salt, plus riboflavin and niacin. Check the current label for amounts rather than assuming them from the product name.

Does MTHFR status decide the answer?

Common MTHFR variants are frequently discussed online, but a genetic result should be interpreted in context. It does not justify self-prescribing large folate amounts or treating symptoms without evaluation. A clinician can consider diet, blood work, medicines, pregnancy plans, and vitamin B12 status.

How to compare a folate label

Check form, amount, and the full formula

Review the form, amount expressed as dietary folate equivalents where applicable, serving frequency, other B vitamins, and total folate from fortified foods and other supplements. More is not automatically better.

Important folate safety considerations

High folate intake can mask or delay recognition of vitamin B12 deficiency while neurologic injury progresses. Ask a professional before high-dose use, especially with anemia, neurologic symptoms, pregnancy, cancer treatment, seizure medicines, methotrexate, or other regular medication. Our B12 forms guide explains related label terms.
